Bringing Portraits to Life: Fine Art Embellishment at Pixels by Emily

At Pixels by Emily, a portrait session doesn’t end when the camera clicks. For many images, it’s only the beginning.

One of the most exciting additions to our studio this year is the use of fine art embellishment—a process where portraits are enhanced by hand to create depth, texture, and painterly detail. The result is a finished piece that feels less like a photograph and more like a piece of artwork meant to live on your walls for generations.

After completing advanced training in fine art embellishment and custom canvas techniques, Emily has begun incorporating these artistic methods directly into select portrait pieces for clients.

From Photograph to Heirloom Artwork

Each embellished portrait begins as a professionally captured image. Once the image is printed onto canvas, the transformation begins.

Using mixed media techniques including acrylic and oil paints, Emily carefully enhances areas of the portrait by hand. Subtle brushwork adds texture to fabrics, soft highlights to hair and skin, and depth throughout the composition. These details bring dimension and movement to the image in a way that a traditional print simply cannot replicate.

Because every stroke is applied by hand, each finished piece becomes completely one-of-a-kind.

A Closer Look at the Process

Creating an embellished portrait is a thoughtful, hands-on process that happens right in the studio.

The canvas is mounted and prepared before layers of paint and texture are carefully added to enhance the original photograph. Some areas receive delicate detail work, while others are softened to create the timeless feel of a painted portrait.

The goal is never to overpower the photograph—but to elevate it.

These techniques allow portraits to feel more like museum-quality artwork, blending photography with traditional fine art.

From Family Portraits to Magical Santa Artwork

These embellishment techniques are being used across a variety of portrait sessions at the studio.

For family and child portrait sessions, the painterly finish can add warmth and depth, turning a favorite image into a statement piece for the home.

For the studio’s beloved Magical Santa Experience, hand-painted enhancements help amplify the storybook atmosphere of the images. Details within the scene can be subtly enhanced to create even more of the nostalgic, magical feeling families love.

Each piece is carefully finished so that the final artwork feels rich, timeless, and truly special.

Why This Matters

In a world where most photographs live on phones or screens, embellished portraits bring photography back into the realm of lasting art.

Every detail—from the way a canvas is stretched to the final brushstroke of paint—contributes to a finished piece designed to be displayed, treasured, and passed down.

These portraits aren’t just images from a session.

They become heirloom artwork that tells your family’s story.
